  • I feel like the game was absolutely balanced to an extent around spirit summons - especially the NPC companion ones you can get for certain bosses like Rogier for Margrit. If a NPC has a summon, I’m summoning them every time if I have trouble soloing the boss but I will usually rarely also do a spirit ash; but I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with doing so.

    dlc spoiler

and if I’m being honest, I went into the DLC with a lvl150 fucking dex/faith/int build and the goddamn moonveil katana because I’d apparently been fucking around with a really annoying blackflame pvp build at some point in between putting the game down like a year ago and picking it back up for the DLC this weekend. And I got so mad dying to Rellana for the like 30th time in a row that I went ‘ok fine fuck it’, equipped Mimic Tear +8, summoned Leda the NPC and used Golden Vow on her, walked into the boss and immediately summoned my mimic. watched in awe as they fucking ganged up on her as I just used the Magma Breath incantation, rolled 15 feet away and spammed black flame/blade & spinning disc incantations with the occasional flask refill at her until she died. kinda trivialized like 90% of the fight because I would just camp on the sides throwing blackflame and when she’d attack, run away from her going ‘help help!!!’ until she realized Leda and my mimic were still throwing shit at her & resumed fighting them. Immediately clipped it and sent it to my tryhard friends & they were actually irate with me but fuck it I’ve fully embraced the ‘useless priest’ RP I’m doing through the DLC. There’s nothing wrong with doing this - the game was built with these mechanics in mind. If Miyazaki cared about me spamming Black Blade that much, he’d patch it out of the game!!! Hope this helps: https://streamable.com/lp6gwy

  • Be sure to check the venue’s site/etc for bag rules - went to a concert last month at an venue I’ve been to like a dozen times before with some friends and they weren’t letting anyone in who had a bag bigger than like 6 inches & they had to be clear. (which pissed off one of my friends who’d brought like a canvas bag specifically for carrying the blanket she was gonna put out & they refused to let her bring it inside even after showing it only held a blanket)

Be prepared to be gouged for anything food/drink wise. I spent $13.00 on a $5 can of liquid death (which my high ass was initially like ‘wtf this is a fucking seltzer i asked for water dude’ to the poor teenager working lol) and a $7.00 soft pretzel. If you’re gonna get wasted, I’d probably recommend pre-gaming outside but I’ve had luck bringing airplane bottles of liquor in my pockets (and had friends who would put them in their bra) and buying a ‘cheaper’ soda to mix/chase it with. If it’s outdoors, you can probably get away with sneaking a joint in (especially if you smoke cigarettes) as most places aren’t gonna care. If you have an electronic vape/cart for weed, same thing and even easier in most cases.

If it’s packed and you’ve brought like a blanket/chair/etc - do NOT be afraid to strike up a conversation with a couple or stranger who might be using way too much space and ask them if they mind if you park right next to them. I have a friend who is a fucking master at this and always leaves concerts with like one new ‘friend’ they’ve made in securing us a spot; never takes her more than a ‘hey do you mind if we/I put our stuff right here?’ and a ‘excited for the show?’. I personally am a bit too self-conscious to ever do it when its really packed, but if you just don’t want to be standing behind a pillar or something and see a spot you could theoretically stand/sit in if someone is gracious enough to pull their chairs together or step slightly closer to their group - it is always worth doing. A large chunk of people who get like lawn chairs and whatnot at concerts are perfectly fine with giving up a bit of space to let someone squeeze in, as long as you’re not rolling like 10 people deep with three blankets or something.

Merch for bigger shows usually sells out by the middle of the concert, so if you’re dead set on getting a poster or something, be sure to stop when you’re entering the venue or, if they play a song you dislike/don’t care about early on, step away at some point during the concert early. As always, the really dedicated people will be at the merch booth as soon as the venue opens and will wait in line while the show is happening - so bear in mind that you may never get that really cool piece of merch if you wait too long, but eh.

Bathrooms will always have a line, but less so when the show is on - so like merch, I usually try to time this for songs that I dislike or have heard live way too many times before. Depending on the venue though, you may be able to hear the show without issue while in line for merch/bathroom/etc - but it’s always a bummer being next in line for the bathroom and hearing your favorite song start!!!

All in all, I actually prefer going to concerts alone because I can just stand/sit somewhere and not really have to worry about my friends (who love dancing) & do stuff like spend 30 minutes in the merch line as soon as the venue opens or sit down and vibe the entire concert - so have fun!!

  • If I could just designate a whole 10x10 area with multiple levels as a ‘catacomb’ and not have to worry about only a single dwarf being buried there; I would absolutely be way more into the kind of Moria style of tomb/catacombs with statues and slabs but having to add a door aggravates me so my dwarves tend to get chucked into warehouses unless they’ve done something really badass like die fighting a forgotten beast

  • The coffins by the apartments is such a great use of the extra space I’m weak but think we should do this in real life. Imagine walking through the Hall of Past Tenants on your way to your apartment with a bunch of coffins and slabs memorializing the fallen. One day I’ll be able to just designate a whole 10z level deep square as a tomb and fill it up with 200 coffins and be done with the annoyance. (although in the current fort I’ve been fucking around with I’ve just stuck a bunch of coffins in a single room as dwarves/pets die and designated them as a 1x1 tomb each time…)

  • It’s up to you whether or not you want to try to complete out the year comrade! If you haven’t done anything of note with the fortress and it hasn’t been too long, I think it’d be perfectly fine to just move down the list of people interested in running a year and come back to you at a later date!

I believe the general consensus for time-limit was about a week or so - so we’re at that already, but if you think you can get the year done over the weekend or in the coming week, I think everyone would be fine with letting you finish it out.

If you don’t think you can do it in a reasonable amount of time and the fortress does have some construction or some event that occurred during your month or so that you think is worth passing along - note it up with the save and either just make a new post to pass it off or I can do it here in the comments.

@Beetle_O_Rourke@hexbear.net was next officially, so if they are down to just pick up where you left off, I’m fine with letting them continue Year 103 (so the remaining like 11 months of your year) as well as Year 104.

If not, it’d probably be best for either me (as the last previous person to complete a year) or @radiofreeval@hexbear.net or @PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net to finish out Year 103 and then just pass it along to the next person (Beetle or @Doubledee@hexbear.net).

Tagging them all so they can post their thoughts as to how to proceed. I’m willing to set aside Shadow of the Erdtree this weekend if needed to bang out the rest of an unfinished year so we can get it passed on - but expect many more mist generators LOL

  • Is the tavern open for business?

The tavern as it stood on Granite 1, Year 103 last night when I closed out of it didn’t have any rentable rooms. It is open to visitors and had 1-2 human/dingo-people visitors at essentially all times after I built the mist generator. I was not particularly worried about theft because Hex is pastured right in the entrance hallway to the tavern (and I even considered chaining a war dog in the tavern as well but there hasn’t been any crimes requiring it yet)

I didn’t touch any of the artifacts unless they were furniture that could be used to improve the quality of a room. The artifact copper bed Porkroll made in his year is currently in the room assigned to the mayor. I believe an artifact cabinet or table is also in the room or perhaps in the Captain of the Guard’s room.

This fort is much neater than anything I make lmao.

SAME lol. Most of my forts use one 20x20 ‘everything but refuse’ stockpile and a single workshop nearby of each type; meanwhile this fortress has at least 15 different stockpiles spread out across different z-levels and like at least 2 of each craft workshop. It has actually inspired me to get better at stockpile management because wow, I knew instinctively that having individual fuel, metal bar, and stone stockpiles right next to the smelter/smithy would result in them sitting down and doing an entire workorder at once rather than take 2 months because they have to travel up 10 z-levels to the central stockpile and bring back a single bar of iron for the next sword, but I didn’t want to believe it (mainly because setting stockpiles is a pain in the ass imo). Same thing with the apartments Porkroll built - holy shit I dunno why I’ve always done 5x3 rooms for EVERY dwarf on a single z-level and lamented quickly running out of space when it is much easier to just build an u/d staircase in the middle of two unoccupied z-levels and just mine out the apartments from there.

I’m now worried about how much I’ll be judged for making anything I add intentionally disorganised and with that home-ey lived-in feel lol.

I had the same fear for like the first hour or two I played which is largely why I think I focused more on building bridges/the mist generator and building out the petitioned zones instead of mining further down, as I would’ve normally certainly established some sort of funky farm in the cavern that dwarves would’ve been running back and forth between without any defense - but I think if no one (yet) has berated me for using the platinum for the chapel floor and then building a 7x8 room for the mayor, you should be perfectly fine going for a more natural kind of fortress with disorganized areas and unfinished rooms!!

  • The fact that a war bear has been acquired is almost prophetic for Hexbear.

Agreed. I was like ferret-poggers when I saw it in the elf caravan. quickest I’ve ever sold a bunch of excess cloth although the rest of my playthrough was basically “oh god Hex is fighting another horse?? she’s gonna die!!”

What does map have? Does it have a river?

There is a river right near the entrance of the fortress, see the bridge pic. I was initially going to make a mist generator for the entire central stairway & fortress below via channeling the river and a bunch of grates every z-level, but I didn’t wanna tank the FPS and also have to worry about accidentally flooding everything by forgetting to drain it off the side of the map. A waterwheel probably would’ve also been better for power but I love having a bunch of windmills powering anything for the first like 20-30 levels built atop a hill/mountain.

I’m surprised you got no strange moods. Someone is gonna get 3 next year.

There were actually like 2-3, including the bone rack, just nothing notable like weapons or armor. Erush Vzolfeb made a masterpiece (or maybe artifact, I only wrote down that they made something) clay figurine during Slate. I believe the other thing was a toy or relatively useless craft as well. Nothing was sold/given away so they all should be in some stockpile or otherwise in the hands of some dwarf (for example the artifact copper bed I stuck in the Mayor/Future Duke’s room since I figured it would be best used for whoever has the highest room quality need at the time rather than sitting in the stockpile).
