Technology@lemmy.world•A Ukrainian corps is battle-testing exoskeletons that can fold into a briefcaseEnglish
14·23 hours agoThis seems just as toyish as did dinnerplate sized drones 2y ago. So chances are I’m wrong again.
I’m sure there are rich people who still have a conscience and may even act on it. The proposed idea (public funding for such research) is just meant to sidestep the morally bankrupts, who -despite being a minority- can still screw it up for everyone. Like the orange baboon and his slavish entourage.

Linux@lemmy.world•FYI Systemd v261, probably due in May, is the release planned to include the 'birthDate' field.English
8·1 day agoYou may be missing the point.
To most people participating in soceity for the last 10yrs is obvious that this is just a step. Think of the boiling frog metaphore. There is BIG money in rent seeking through enshittification.
Fortunately open source software is not controllable to the same degree by legistlation as proprietary shit (ms, apple). So, while specific countries or states could create such laws, open source software in general is unlikely to comply. The reason is simple: everyone has access to the source code, so anyone can rip out any offending piece of code. Which is happening with systemd right now.
Btw, if I’m not mistaken the systemd PR implementing the birthdate change is closed wihout the code being merged. For now.

582·2 days agoI didn’t know him, but apparently he financed the republicans. If that is indeed the case I say fuck this guy.
On the other hand the site took out the middleman/madam who traditionally exploited these women (perhaps man as well) So, good for them!
Edit: I’m an idiot, I’m sure the site took a fat percentage of the earnings, so technically they just replaced the pimps. And just like that my sympathy is gone…
And you imagine they’d just give the cure (whatever form that may be) away for free? That’s not what billionairs are known for! Can you imagine the calamity that such power would cause? People getting a personalized quote for
curingmanaging their cancer, which will definitely include an “affordable” monthly payment. There is an applicable recent Black Mirror episode giving you an idea of a similar scenario. No, if there is ever such an endevour, I sincerly hope it will be funded by public money and there may no patents come forth of the research or cure.

Linux@programming.dev•Surge in Systemd forks after the latest changes
61·3 days agoMaybe they will, but this is beside the point. Regardless the forks, look at the wider response. I can’t imagine Linux users will accept this, not because of any thechnical impact or systemd haters hating. This is people actively preparing to make a stand against enshittification and techbros funded legistlation.

Linux@programming.dev•Surge in Systemd forks after the latest changes
201·3 days agoI think there is an intention to convey a clear message. I will be warching the distro’s. Red Hat, being an IBM company, will probably back this age verification farce. I’m not so sure about the community distro’s like Debian or Arch. Maybe even Ubuntu will stop short.
Despite being a minor technical feature, I think this will have a disproportionate response from people.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I am an American. I used to be proud of my country. Now it feels like a turd circling the drain. Is there anything going on behind the scene that America is actually doing good in?
3·5 days agoI like how you make your point, but the soft power of the US is over. As pointed out by others, the current administration is a sympthom, not an aberration.
US may have military primacy and the reserve currency, but neither can restore the loss of the appeal it had between post-ww2 and 2020. When tourists get deported after months of incarceration and we see videos of masked federal goons shooting people in the face, that is something else. When allying with the US gets you humiliation, threats, or even missle and drone attacks, that just does not seems like the smart move. So, respectfully, with friends like the US who needs enemies?
Wishing you best of luck getting your country back tough.

22·6 days agoIf this will indeed be implemented, that is finally an objectively good reason for the haters. I wonder how distros will deal with this.

I agree, they start to sound desperate to keep their current momentum going. I think the bubble will burst soon. Things look solid until they’re not.
