It sounds like you’re proud of your country and want it to improve. That’s what the SMBC comic is saying is “patriotism”. They might have used simpler & fewer words than you did, but that’s only to dumb it down so it’s easily understood.

Here’s the cynical take. Studios make shows adapted from books not because they’re looking for good ideas, but because they’re looking for good investments. When a studio greenlights a show, they don’t know if they’ll make a return on that investment. But a book series comes with a pre-existing fanbase already disposed to watch whatever gets made. With Star Trek, that audience is trekkies. Adapting the books won’t make the show any more likely to succeed, so it’s probably not going to happen.

There is a difference between legal & illegal immigrants. I was talking about legal ones & made no mention of illegal immigration. It sounds like you might be saying that legal immigrants become illegal after some period of time? If that’s true in your country, that’s fine. But in many countries, people can legally be non-citizen residents for extended periods. In countries without birthright citizenship, their kids aren’t automatically citizens.

You’re looking at one scenario which doesn’t come up too frequently, and based on that you’ve decided that the way your country does it is better. Maybe you’re right.

Here’s a different scenario where I think the US does it better: when citizenship is only inherited, a person could be born in your country, live their whole lives knowing only your culture, and still not be considered a citizen because their parents were immigrants. Or worse, their grandparents were immigrants. That’s a homegrown underclass.

I don’t assume that the US has everything figured out, but there’s a reason a nation of immigrants values the rights of immigrants.

It’s a fantasy stand-in for “mason”. “Wainwrights control the country” would be a conspiracy theory you probably shouldn’t talk about during sex. The all seeing eye is a masonic symbol.

Not all people have ID, but the bigger danger with this one is that it’s targeting people whose name doesn’t match what’s on the official record. And that mostly means recently married women and trans people. Two groups that conservatives don’t want voting. As ever, it’s not about the IDs.

More Americans didn’t vote in the 2024 election than voted for Trump. Plenty of Trump voters acknowledged that they didn’t like him. If people had more than two choices, they’re less likely to not vote or to vote for the fascist.

You’re not wrong, but I don’t see the advantage of turning your nose up at people who want to be your allies.

asksciencefiction is about fantasy as much as it is about sci-fi, and about other fiction as well. it’s for silly questions like “could Shaggy & Scooby have taken the ring to Mordor?” i would think that would make it a bad fit, but who knows.
