I think Krugman has generally focused on labor productivity when talking about technology and the economy. He made that prediction in the 90s, when the productivity paradox was a topic.
Obviously I was wrong about the internet petering out, and have admitted that. So it goes. Show me an economist who claims never to have made a bad prediction, and I’ll show you someone who’s either dishonest or unwilling to take intellectual risks.
He has a recent-ish oped (direct nyt link) where he admits he was wrong but then brings up labor productivity again, waggles his eyebrows, and gives you a smouldering look. He sounded convincing to me, but I don’t have the background knowledge to know if he’s cherry picking his numbers.
I can’t imagine even the skinniest fit and thinnest 100% cotton denim fabric to mold to the legs enough to differentiate between toned and untoned calf muscles. I can’t even imagine the new 98% cotton, 2% elastane jeans to be that tight.
I can only conclude OOP’s definition of toned leg ∨ definition of jeans differ significantly from mine.

I’m much more familiar with those terms being used in the active present tense sense than in a past tense sense. The elastic interval on the strain axis tends to be surprisingly short and plastic deformation can be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Holding that rubber band and having it stretch due to gravity is almost certainly an elastic deformation. I would be very surprised if there was no plastic deformation from that disposable spoon bending.
A good rule of thumb is: if I cycled this change a bajillion times, would I eventually detect a difference? If you answer yes, then plastic deformation is occurring.
I think being sieged is probably the worse option. Being the defending side in a siege generally accompanies local force inferiority. If they do take the fortress, things will suck a lot for you.
I think a better formulation might be: When one army is assaulting a fortress, and the other defending, try to be in neither of them.

Arable land is limited, people really don’t want to watch their family members starve, and the entire economic system is maybe kind of reliant on squeezing peasants to do the things necessary for society to function, so there’s strong incentives of all kinds to work a lot

They can have hot breath while having a regular body temperature. Flint starters or a pilot light in their mouth combined with a high fiber diet and the right microbiome solve this problem.
The only question left is how to move the flammable gases to the mouth. Maybe they have sacs they have to fill with roughage in their mouth. Maybe the only barrier in their digestive system is at the end so eau de colon just constantly seeps out.

I love the idea of imageboards. I love “anonymous” posting as a default. I love ephemeral threads.
I thought generals were pretty good. Board culture was real. People would make nontrivial 4chan optimized original content for what I assume was love of art.
There was something special about 4chan that I don’t think exists in forums, lemmy, tumblr, tiktok, or the other forms of social media we have now.
But the place was a shithole.
Split as it was by boards and threads, I could insulate myself from it to some extent but the culture on 4chan was getting worse year by year. The famous boards attracted the MAGA crowd and population had a large effect on what threads lived and died. I had so many threads hidden and yet I would still get a wave of revulsion looking at the catalog on my favorite board.
There are other imageboards. There are open source imageboard projects. Without 4chan’s shadow, I hope that imageboards and imageboard culture develop in different directions.
The dating feels like it might’ve originally been Han dynasty, which then got translated into exact years for those unfamiliar with Chinese dynasties.
