IIRC the key difference is that it’s smoother/softer and doesn’t feel itchy. I only own merino wool stuff though and can’t remember last time I wore regular wool, so not sure of other differences.

Bought a bunch of long sleeve shirts from Costco (like 15ish?) when they were cheap, as low as $6 per shirt as well as their Kirkland socks (for women, men’s are garbage) so some good deals can still be had there on certain products.

Only saw 50% merino wool/synthetic mix base layers though for sale there, but I know Ice breaker can occasionally have decent sales, but their prices have gone up over the years and quality down a bit since they move production out of NZ.

Edit: I think I first saw the shirts in UK, but only bought them in Canada and they’re made in Canada. They’ve doubled in price (non sale) in the last 3-4 years, but still cheaper than anywhere else and could be used as base layer.

  • Most things in our regular day-to-day lives would leave residue, even water (maybe deionized wouldn’t?) just a matter of how much and how noticeable. About the soap, well if you smell it on your hands after wash, then it’s still there and you will rub it onto stuff. At least it’s just soap tho…

I don’t know if you can reasonably remove all contaminants off your skin, unless you plan to like glove up or destroy the skin by washing waayyyyy too often. But you know, good hygiene will keep things you touch nicer for longer so keep at it.

  • Tbf unless you’re really anal about it, you’re never going to have perfectly clean hands all the time. But if your controller is getting discoloured quickly and regularly, then you can probably tell where the problem lies regardless of its colour.
I have similar issue with mouse, but it takes about 3-4 years of regular use for it to get really noticeably discoloured or start rubbing off top coat, to a point where even cleaning with IPA doesn’t do anything. And that’s a black mouse.
Also worth noting, many hand creams are a big no-no imho. Some of that shit destroys your gear, worse than any dirt.

  • Not sure why you’re downvoted, but I think you’re close to at least partial reason. Having one device last a few years makes it easier to replace under warranty, if what you’re truly trying to do is provide superior customer service over competition (they probably have lost of spare parts, as it makes sense to order bulk and of extras, unless you’re super greedy company who has no faith in its product).
And as I assume you’re suggesting, they’re going to make their money on the games that people buy to play on that device, so why waste effort on making miniscule improvements that may end up hurting your brand and labelling you a money grabber.
Don’t get me wrong, Valve know how to make lots of money, but I bet they’re smart enough to try and do it in a “sustainable” way from their perspective.
