This is why I was against the ACA when it first passed. I was self employed with no insurance but I would sometimes negotiate prices for care by paying cash up front.

Suddenly I was mandated to buy insurance I couldn’t afford with a $13k out of pocket for my wife and I on top of our premiums. So we ended up with insurance we couldn’t afford to use and got no care at all for several years after it passed.

The only reason we can afford to go to the Dr now is because she got a job working for the schools, and govt employees have good benefits.
