Recently got diagnosed. Before I was, I had issues with my internet but also wanted to clean that day. So i decided id try and fix the internet and then clean.
I started at 2 pm and ended at 8 pm. I did not clean.
You described last Thursday.
No thanks… That one’s been sitting there for so long now that it would just be weird if it weren’t there any more.
But… If I put them in the kitchen where they belong my roommates will use them and horde them in their room.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD and I don’t relate to this. Weird. When consuming posts in this sub there are some things that I do relate to and others I don’t.
Everybody’s ADHD appears to be different. Can anyone confirm this?
It’s a wide spectrum in general, not everything applies uniformly to everyone IMO, regardless of diagnosis status. Varying cultures, upbringings and other factors also come into play
Yes, its actually a real shame they medically dont have sub categories. Some dont have hyperfocus, some dont have memory issues, some have overlapping mild OCD, lots dont have hyperactivity (tapping feet, clicking pens), etc. Its not just a spectrum but a multi-spectrum across many different categories.
The common ground is the inability to control focus/attention at will, it just turns out that it usually comes with a lot of other things too.
I’ve recently started to take medication. While this does help with my ability to focus, I have the feeling it just doesn’t improve my memory. In my job I have to manage a lot of things and keep the details in mind. So I’m struggling and ask myself if I’m in the right business after all…

Memory in terms of information retrevial (ex: memorizing digits of pi) can be learned.
However, trigger-based memory (“when I get home I should do X”, “before I leave I should do Y”, etc), is usually not something that can be learned or improved and I think its really counter productive to “just try harder”. Unless you’re in a pretty tight situation though (like gov work where you can’t record or write down the info, or fast-paced work like waiter/waitress work where theres no time to record/revie), there’s usually a way to work around a deficiency in trigger based memory.
Sometimes we can be in the wrong bussiness, but usually its a matter of support systems.
More often its wrong bussiness because they dont let us setup “unusual” and “shouldnt-be-necessary” support systems
Or just don’t bring cups and dishes into your room n just leave them there? That’s just like, c’mon. And clean your damn microwave, too mfers

Dude, this is an ADHD post in an ADHD community. If we could just do that in the first place, we wouldn’t have ADHD. Nor would this post be so universally relatable to everyone with ADHD.
I have ADHD and solved this problem by telling myself that plates, bowls, and utensils belong in the kitchen/dining room. Also, not to eat anywhere else in the house.
Had to because when the shame of cleaning things with mold/dehydrated food is more painful than confining myself too a single place to eat.
Also, reuseable water bottles and no cups.
I’m glad that worked for you but a significant part about ADHD is that setting habits is notoriously difficult to the point of impossibility in most people. I can do something every day for weeks, miss two days, and then totally forget I was ever doing it in the first place. Used stuff is no different. Then there’s the situation that not everyone can eat in the kitchen/dining room. I don’t have that as an option. We don’t really have a dining room and the kitchen is a tiny strip that you can barely stand in, nevermind eat in.
Even then, none of that matters. Dude was shaming people for doing this and that is simply not okay. Especially not when it’s been so commonly linked to an actual medical problem. I’m not super cool with that.
I love reusable bottles tbh, replaced my old plastic one with a nice Sigg stainless steel one following some recommendations by others here on Lemmy a while back, and it’s sooo much more convenient and satisfying to use.
On the flipside, when I use cups they tend to get neglected 😅
I want a new water bottle, but the two Kamelbak bottles are still in good shape. Can’t justify buying it until they completely die.
Same food and drink does not leave the kitchen/dining area. I do make an exception for water and coffee on the coffee table though. Fortunately that is very close to the kitchen and a good prompt to put them away.
My wife and I also swap chores every day so it helps with accountability. Like I have to clean the kitchen and do dishes at this time specifically because I will not be being fair otherwise. I’d be a wreck if I lived alone.
So you basically used ADHD to beat ADHD 🙃
That’s how I solved most of my issues. I know my habits and failures, so finding a lazy solution helps…

I know you’re paraplegic but just stand up and grab that umbrella from the rack. Like, come on, it’s just sanding ffs.
Make sense? The whole of this sub is to tackle mental disorders that make some aspects of life hard (or impossible for some). No matter how trivial or small those things may seem to others.
This is correct. Don’t bring food into your bedroom unless you don’t have another room to eat in.
