The best thing about lemmy is that it brings back things like this that I often thought about and really wanted to find again to be able to fill the gaps in my memory, but couldn’t remember enough about it to be able to find on Google.

Its not the first time it happens to me. Anyway, thanks op. I had given up hope on finding this one again.

This is what Reddit used to do for me. The weirdest thing Reddit ever did was give me the name of an insect that for years I tried to Google when I would see it and I have legitimately only ever seen the bug 3 times in my 28 years of life. They are so small, so infrequent, and so rare that I thought for years I wasn’t even seeing an I sect but just a fuzz from a dandelion once it changes.

I mean for actual fucking years I could not find the regular name, the slang name (usually changes based on dialect, or even the scientific name. The amount of times I searched for “white fuzzy bug” or “white floating bug.” No matter the combination. I even would tell people, “I remember seeing this bug and I have seen it so rarely I don’t even know if it is real.” And most of my friends would say, “yeah never seen it.” And then that one friend would say, “dude me too.” And then one fucking day I open Reddit and God dammit if I didn’t believe it someone gave me the name. Actual years of feeling insane and thinking those little fuckers were a sign of something higher because of how fragile and cute they are and Reddit not only gives me the name, confirms I am sane but enlightens me on the little bastards they actually are.

I am from West Virginia and if you made it this far well by God if you have seen one then I swear on mother nature you aren’t insane and we are in this together.

the most interesting thing about this is the fact that “removed” is blurred out, but not “gay ass queer”. times have changed and i feel so fucking old.

e: til you can’t say it on lemmy.

You’ve brought up a real interesting and nuanced point, which is “what’s the difference between an insult and a slur, and when does one become the other?” And a lot of it’s just down to “whether the target of said insult/slur feels it’s so offensive as to actually cause harm or be a predictor of causing harm,” I think.

In the cases you’ve pointed out, redacted is still very much a slur, whereas “queer” definitely used to be and is now going through a sort of reclamation phase, so whether someone considers it a slur or not really kind of depends on their own history with it. “Queer” is definitely a word with an actively evolving meaning and legacy*, I think, and since we’re in the middle of it I’m not sure whether it will end up fully reclaimed or the pendulum will swing the other way eventually.

*all words are actively evolving like this but it’s much quicker with insults and slurs because of the emotion involved

Anyway, back to the subject of Drath’nor the Anus Destroyer.

I think it’s kinda funny when people censor only slurs but leave all other insults, like it will make it less offensive lol

I think slurs are way more offensive than swear words.

Swear words are “offensive” arbitrarily. Some people don’t like “shit” because it is a more crude way to say “poop”. Most swearwords only became this way through classism. They were deemed offensive by the wealthy because they were initially used by the poor; using them was akin to associating yourself with the lesser classes.

Slurs are offensive by design. Their only purpose is to denigrate people based on their immutable personal characteristics (race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)

It’s in a meme. Reading it doesn’t harm you. Anymore than reading the other stuff in the meme does, or even just knowing it’s written

I would rather people don’t use it at all if you don’t mind and I gladly censor myself when it comes to other slurs. I can’t convey the mental anguish and self hatred that I’ve suffered all because of an immutable characteristic of my sexuality. You can treat it lightly because you haven’t gone through that suffering. It’s one thing for someone to make fun of you for kicks. It’s quite another for entire groups of people to hate you because of what you are.

      Because it breaks Rule 1

Refrain from using harmful language pertaining to a protected characteristic: e.g. race, gender, sexuality, disability or religion.

A little bit of cultural linguistics going on really. Even though the texts are also calling OOP gay and queer, and doing so with the same amount of vitriol as with the f-slur, they aren’t recognized as emotionally charged in the same way. All the other cursing is not hate speech per se as it’s not directly targeting any immutable characteristics.

I’m not happy with any of the depicted harassment in the image (fake or not), it just not that funny. If you want to see what happens if you have a descenting opinion though, you can see my massively downvoted post below.

That’s ridiculous, quoting harassment is in no way itself harassment. That would undo just about every awareness campaign ever.

Depends on the reason for the quote. Awareness campaigns quote them as examples of what not to do. There is a clear intention to tell the audience “Watch out for this, avoid it, this is wrong.”

The punchline in this example is an encouragement to harass people because it’s funny.

Sexual harassment is not funny just because the victim is a straight guy. If this happened to a woman, everyone would be rightfully up in arms.
