I’m gonna convert an ancient engine from a distributor to coil-on-plug. I’ve done wasted-spark conversions but this time C.O.P. is the way to go.

The engine is a Rambler (AMC) 195.6 OHV, inline 6, 4500 rpm max, 3.2 liter/125 hp. Want to use available OEM modules, not expensive aftermarket.

Most COP modules are tall and skinny, for overhead cam engines. Mine’s pushrod, so the plugs poke out the side.

What I need is short stubby modules. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Ooh thanks I’ll go look at the Volvo stuff! Corvair folk also have to invent a lot of solutions, being GM orphans.

    I gotta take the valve cover off annually to adjust the valves but could mount them on a bracket.

      The volvo applications could definitely give you some good inspiration! We’re pretty creative, especially when it comes to improving the (arguably okay-ish) ignition systems, especially on the older cars. Something that would be a little closer to your engine would be the B18 engine in the Volvo Amazon, P1800 and 140 cars, since they are also OHV

      The GM coils are pretty small, so you may be able to mount them somewhere else. Looking at pictures of the engine on Google, it looks like there is some space midway down the block near the bell housing that would have enough space to mount them 3x3.

      I know you wanted to be able to use off the shelf parts, but making your own spark plug leads is pretty easy, and cheap, which makes mounting them remotely a lot easier

        Oh I’m totally fine making things, wires are no big deal at all.

        I put EDIS-6 on one of these engines, it’s wonderful. This time I’m writing my own code instead of using Megajolt/e which is now getting old.

        Today I worked out pne of the Toyota COP modules that’s fairly short, bought one from Rock Auto and a connector, I’ll see what that looks like.

        But I will search for Volvo hacks – the b18, b20 and the 122 car itself has always been a favorite.

        Can you recommend a Volvo site?

          Nice, that’s awesome! I’d like to be able to do that stuff myself, but getting past the initial learning curve seems really steep

          But yeah, the turbo bricks forum will probably be your best bet, there is also swede speed, but they focus more on FWD volvos. As usual, the site based search function is garbage, so just use google
