I’m seeing two posts from the mods that are sneerworthy content that aren’t meta-posts announcing the de-sunsetting of r/sneerclub. I just wanna know what’s up.
FWIW, I will stay here and probably won’t participate in the subreddit out of laziness.
the official word is that we can now sneer on our choice of an enshittified website with weird vibes or a federated nuthouse running on broken software nobody likes. enjoy!
It seems like many still-active redditors have consulted Ass, My, et al (2024) to conclude any alternative to reddit were abject failures and not worth investigating
No, I’ve done a lot of research here and it may be time
I’ve never been a frequent commenter in either this community or the subreddit. Though the subreddit moving here was the primary reason I created an account in the fediverse.
I think it’s good that the community can just move somewhere else. Though, at the blackout last year, reddit did seize larger subreddits from mods and prevented them at times from linking to fediverse related instances. My opinion is that this sub escaped it because reddit didn’t value the size of the subscriber list enough (even though people are commenting here surprised by the reach from /r/sneerclubs still existing followers list)
I think there was a lots of progress made in the last year with the fediverse, but it does make sense to me for why people who are concerned with the viewership of their content would want to move back.

Eh, I wonder if that need for attention is the problem with social media in general. I’ve really enjoyed the lower stakes discussions with experts here. I’m also digging the absence of noise generated by anonymous drive-by weirdos trying to maximize their internet points. Mind you, I think the structure of the fediverse is a net negative, but high-quality moderation on awful is more than accounting for that AND it doesn’t have all the built in attention-economy dark pattern stuff, so it’s easy to check real quick then put down, which is nice.
If you compare our buttcoin to /r/buttcoin today, for example, the difference is vast and obvious.
It remains to be seen if the New Management at /r/sneerclub can perform at the same level, but based on the news, I can see why someone might want to fire up the ole popcorn machine at this particular point in time.

For a moment I thought I’d replied in the wrong context, but it looks like I just straight up replied to the wrong thing. My bad either way
Ooooh somehow I replied to your reply to the comment rather than to the comment (originally replying to me)
no worries!

the official word on our end is: no idea! we’re monitoring @mawhrin@awful.systems’s post over there with interest.
in a typical reddit fashion the post is getting downvotes despite just asking the obvious question.
I’m a bit weirded out that new posts on a year dead subreddit suddenly get ~50-100 upvotes
to be honest, I’m getting a weird vibe off the resurrected /r/SneerClub in general. that might just be me though
Scabs the lot of them!
snabs?
/u/completely-ineffable, who founded the sub, and closed the sub a year ago, literally just made a post! That’s all that happened! I’m distantly in touch with that person! Everything is fine! In fact I’d almost be tempted to theorise it was all a dumb ruse to see if you lot turned out to be crazy people!
And it seems to have worked wonders!
Who even put the term “resurrected” in there? It’s one post, followed by a smattering of others including posts bickering about the supposed resurrection! What monstrous goings on are people permitting themselves to imagine?
People are still subscribed to the subreddit. When a post gets made, it goes on their reddit feed. Lots of mobile users in particular will just have seen it pop up while doomscrolling.
They had a lot of subscribers.
“Why, for fuck’s sake?”, as an illucutionary act, seems to do a lot more than simply “asking the obvious question”
But it is, indeed, in typical reddit fashion to omit that sort of thing from one’s own complaint about the response one got to one’s provocation, notwithstanding the traditional SneerClub response to user’s complaints, which is of course “if you want to leave, but can’t, we can help with that”
Twice the sneer, double the… club?
so the official reply is that mod got bored, and also was asked to re-open. which is, of course, fine.
and to be clear
- i didn’t think there is any conspiracy, that would be ridiculous,
- if we subscribe to the idea that a community is owned, not stewarded, by mods, it’s perfectly fine to do with the community whatever the mods want, without the need of them being accountable to anyone else,
- i do think that reopening the sub after closing it in protest is mostly sad,
- and a very small and rather insignificant footnote to a more general discussion on (f)utility of using master’s tools to bring down the master’s house.
i have a reading account for when i need to read reddit via logged-in account, so i went and asked.
ETA-1: and got banned for asking.
ETA-2: the subreddit’s description still has “sub moved to https://awful.systems” in the old view.
thread closed by some guy called “giziti”?
Looks like he was a mod as recently as a year ago, but doesn’t know what’s up either. Seems weirdly hostile to us, though.
not only the thread is closed, i was banned for asking that question:
transcript follows
Hello, You have been permanently banned from participating in r/SneerClub because you broke this community’s rules. You won’t be able to post or comment, but you can still view and subscribe to it.
Note from the moderators:
There, the sub is dead again (for you).
If you have a question regarding your ban, you can contact the moderator team by replying to this message.
:/
it was always a risk; questioning someone’s integrity, be it directly or indirectly, is rarely welcomed.
needless to say, i’m even less inclined to resume any activity on reddit.
bonus: some *chan-pilled gobshite thinks this branch is not cool enough (cw: ableism)
It has no reach. Sorry. I myself go there every few weeks to check last threads, but becoming insular autistic circlejrk circlejerking over other autist made it intellectualy impotent, sorry.
Yeah bad vibes on the undead sub. Amazed by the person goign ‘it can be hard to reach new people on the fediverse’ when there have been a lot more randos who don’t know what this place is here, and some threads went the lemmiverse equiv of viral.
Lol at them thinking sneerclub was a great intellectually potent place vs a place to say ‘look at this extremely offended dork’ a lot.

Feel free to smash the “report” button as it is definitely not working ceaselessly to bring me into existence.
nah, i’m not going back where i’m clearly not wanted; the mods can take care of this themselves.
Very glad to see the sub being run exactly as it was always supposed to be.
Hail Mod!
I know this isn’t what you meant but I’ve long been fascinated (and slowly ramping up my clue in relevant areas) of using natural phenomena as synth/sound inputs. which is why I misread this at first
Sometimes I wonder what it was like to exist in a time when there were sentient beings capable of hearing natural phenomena. Now they are only heard as synth/sound inputs…
haha :)
nah, you misunderstand me (although that’s on me for not explaining in any depth whatsoever)
I’m extremely in the every-sound-is-valid camp. as in, I don’t (for example) have an “intake” filter/process/whatever that makes hardspace things be perceived as dubstep, or any such flavour shit. but (for me at least) it is the exploration of sound itself that is fun - the composition, the production, the perception. the way it interplays with perception. all of it!
as to the specific thing I mentioned in previous comment, the flavour I want to chase for the thing I want to make is literally using hail (possibly through modelling? not sure) as a driving input (same as people have used motion, light, and space as methods in creation)
Giziti was made a mod to take pressure off the modteam, along with David Gerard (who also founded this place). The inference you’re drawing that they’re hostile seems wrong: it’s targeted not at this place but at people using the existence of this place to spam fediverse garble on the subreddit, demanding new rules to link to the fediverse(!)
but at people using the existence of this place to spam fediverse garble on the subreddit, demanding new rules to link to the fediverse(!)
fair play, then! Thanks for the info!
It’s good to know that the oppo haven’t gotten a hold of our old digs
Answer on a postcard
I have often thought about just nuking most of my reddit posts and have not done so because I’m easily distracted. So I also feel like the latter.
Instead of nuking it, it would be better for the fediverse if you backlinked your favorite fediverse instance in all of your comments. It’s your content, you wrote it, you own the license to it. It would seem absurd if YouTube made a rule that stated video creators couldn’t talk about the merch they sell or their company association. Though, some subreddits might make the decision to censor some of your comments.
This tool is easy to use to edit all comments. It doesn’t provide the ability to add a signature to all comments though, and only allows you to fully edit a comment.
That is not something I would prob do, as I think that is a little bit annoying and spammy. (and I don’t like to do things I don’t like myself while leaning on ‘technically there is no rule against it’. It would also be annoying in a few old subreddits which I used to post in which have nothing to do with all of this (and I don’t want to annoy them), so I would to have put more work into whitelisting/blacklisting the various subs. But still thanks, somebody else might want to use it.
So far I have mostly resorted to manually deleting a few posts every now and then so far. (And the few times I still use it nowadays, a few posts per month, I tend to delete the posts eventually already).
I’m also not sure im interesting enough as a poster for people to actually follow me, or that people actually care that much. Tried before the restart to every now and then point towards this instance and I found that process annoying. (So this also means a large percentage of the people now left in sneerclub will be the worst, so it might finally morph into the boogyman the Rationalists always made it out to be).

Some people seem to be genuinely happy it’s back, but that could just be the honeymoon phase, so let’s see. I might even post there now and then since I still use my Reddit account because I stuck around thanks to discoverability in the Fediverse being just awful which means I haven’t found a good replacement for a bunch of communities I like.
I just hate reddit.
I think it’s just a combination of seeming genuine and not appearing to sell something. Like if you had a conversation with someone on reddit, and they were looking at their past comments with you, and then saw that you had modified them to include “If you found my content useful, I’ve left reddit because I don’t agree with reddit’s decisions. I’m now located in the fediverse. I’ve left this content available, but I don’t plan on using reddit.”
Though, I do think something appearing as spam is bad and can be counterproductive, so maybe I need to think about it more.
I am not much of a Reddit muckraker. I checked out the posts from the mods I didn’t recognise. The longtime mod Son_of_Sophroniscus appears to now be alt-right? Other than that, I still can’t make heads or tails of any of it.
I would have thought anyone who regularly posted on the sub in the last 7 years or so would be well aware that there were effectively two active moderators, only one of whom - the founder and head mod /u/completely-ineffable - is still on reddit, and who made the first new post (being “The EA Case for Trump”)
Two further moderators were added shortly before the AI reddit fuckaround which spawned this place, with one of them being David Gerard (who formally spawned this place)
A conclusion I am genuinely surprised to see nobody drawing is obvious: a mod just decided to post something, and turned on comments on for the sake of comments. What’s the deal with trying to figure that out as if it’s some kind of high level management decision?
Yo dawg, slow your roll. Yes, that is the easy explanation. I just wanted more information before jumping to any conclusions. Not all of us (read: I) were deeply familiar with the moderator dynamics nor had a reason to be.
Again either way I’ve made my choice to be here, so to me, it doesn’t really matter what’s going on beyond my own curiosity.
Throwing in that comment about Son_of_Sophroniscus was pretty out there! My roll would be pretty damn slow had you just left that out. But instead we’ve got that, people talking about a “weird/bad vibe”, reading tea leaves all over the shop…
But even in just your own case, it seems like the opposite of not jumping to conclusions to throw in references to old mods going alt right that bear absolutely zero relationship to any of the handful of posts on the “resurrected” sub
Throwing in that comment about Son_of_Sophroniscus was pretty out there!
It seemed relevant to the discussion to look at the moderator list in case there was any information. In this case, the information seemed to be a dead end, which is why I didn’t try to speculate beyond a statement of fact.
But instead we’ve got that, people talking about a “weird/bad vibe”, reading tea leaves all over the shop…
People are allowed to comment on the vibe. I think it is completely fair to express frustration at the reopening for the reasons stated in other parts of this thread.
But even in just your own case, it seems like the opposite of not jumping to conclusions to throw in references to old mods going alt right that bear absolutely zero relationship to any of the handful of posts on the “resurrected” sub
I can’t believe I have to explain this very ordinary attempt of trying to see what’s going on:
- the status quo changes (r/sneerclub comes back online)
- I look for answers (in this case, I ask here for information, and look around the subreddit for information)
- I resist the urge to jump to the easy/obvious answer, and share what little information I had here
Then, as you pointed out in your other comments, it was the obvious answer, which I will happily accept as there is proof.
I just think, and perhaps this is just me, that it is weird, conspiratorial, speech to summarise your research into this question as, paraphrasing, ‘I found out one of the old mods has gone alt right’ and nothing more
It’s also defensive speech to say “people are allowed to comment on the vibe”. I know they’re allowed to comment on the vibe! I think they’re weird for detecting a bad/weird vibe! I think it’s indicative of a conspiratorial framing! There is so little information to go on in these speculations, and literally none of it out of keeping with ordinary goings on at SneerClub, for anyone remotely invested in anything that has ever gone on there
Similarly, I found your speech to frame the question itself conspiratorially, as if the fact that one of the old mods has hints of having gone alt right - despite having nothing to do with any recent posts on the subreddit - is worth mentioning at all, certainly not as the only thing of note that your research turned up
I didn’t say: “X mod has gone alt-right! This must be a conspiracy! The moon isn’t real!”
I said: “I guess this mod has gone alt-right?”
Seeing and mentioning changes is worth mentioning, even if those changes are unrelated. That’s just… basic observation.
Of course, if you want to conspiratorially cast aspersions on everything I’m saying, that’s fine. I am going to disengage starting… now.
It’s more that I think the whole discussion is completely head-ass
Nobody who knows anything about the sub should think it’s remotely worth asking beyond “I guess a mod did that”, it’s literally always been this way
All I know is one fundamental thing: between 49 to 100 per cent of you are all fucking nuts.
It’s getting taken over by new, more compliant mods after it got abandoned by the OG mods, expect a sharp drop in quality of content too.
completely-ineffable was the original mod, hence being first on the mod list, so not really no
Yes, but they were inactive for a long while and all of a sudden they come back acting very different than before.
lmao, are you doing a bit? What the fuck could you possibly know, and why didn’t you check the easily checkable history of the sub’s modlist? The fact that you felt compelled to make this up should, frankly, embarrass you away from offering your comments on anything to do with either the sub or this instance at all
Why are you defending them?
