Horror movies are back. Actually they never left. Yet after a few underperformed in the springtime, pundits with apparently a short-term memory about the genre perceived that its popularity was on the decline. Turns out, reports of its demise were greatly exaggerated—like always.

One of the most basic and satisfying things cinema can offer is a safe space to be scared, to be intimidated, and to be thrilled at the sights of wicked things. And there’s been wickedness aplenty in 2024. Here are the best ones for those interested in looking for such delights…

  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • The Substance
  • Speak No Evil
  • Sleep
  • The First Omen
  • Abigail
  • Strange Darling
  • Late Night With the Devil
  • In a Violent Nature

You stopped scrolling too soon. The list goes on:

    • Cuckoo
    • Longlegs
    • Oddity

I thought it a biy weird that the main image is from Longlegs but it didn’t make the list.

It’s definitely a good year for horror, we’ve still got left a few contenders:

    • Terrifier 3 - which will make most end-of-year lists
    • Sleep 2 - which is more popular than I realised, it left me cold
    • Nosferatu - I’m not sure what it’ll bring to the table but we’ll see
    • Heretic - looks like a good central performance from Hugh Grant
    • The Platform 2 - has a lot of promise
    • Azrael - never bet against a Samara Weaving horror
    • Nightbitch - Amy Adams ending the year for us
