Violet sits on the floor surrounding by baking ingredients and a baking bowl. She says,“Let’s see now…a few grains of salt…one teaspoon vanilla…”
She pours ingredients into the bowl and continues,“Two cups of light cream…two eggs separated…”
She starts stirring and exclaims,“Rats! It’s just no use!!”
She stands and looks down at the bowl and concludes,“No matter what you do to it…a mud pie is still a mud pie!”

I guess it’s from Schulz not wanting to show adults in the strips, because I think kids would mostly have helped out with the adults cooking. Or maybe with kids roaming around the neighborhood more back in the day, mud pies were a more popular option. Or maybe it was a commentary on the quality of food Schulz was getting fed IRL at the time.
