I had a conversation with an ML about how great North Korea was. They kept insisting that people wanted to stay in North Korea, which is why no one left.

Didn’t an american in south korea commit a bunch of crimes and then try to defect to the DPRK and got returned back? Why not make that same criticism of the US / South Korea? What makes this person’s scenario different?

Do you have any evidence that this person fled North Korea because they were a criminal? And I mean actual crime, not “forgetting to save the portrait of Dear Leader first in a house fire” crime.

No? Then why are you talking out your ass?

        Ah, that’s why.

That was actually my intro to lemmy–not knowing who hexies were and arguing with them that if you want a real opinion about NK you should ask the citizens. But oh wait you can’t bc they live under a dictator who won’t allow info in and out. Of course that meant I was a shitlib who only knows western propaganda 🙄

Edit: oh noes, the tankies found me!

To play devil’s advocate, there are defectors in the other direction as well and people who defect and then return. Individual cases aren’t proof of much, especially in such a fertile ground for propaganda.

What’s more persuasive, at least to me, are the public actions of the regime and the fact that The Communist Utopia ™ has a monarchy and clear militarist cult and supporting heirarchy.
