I DID THE UPDATE to the applications.
They’re LIVE LIVE LIVE
you can view them when you go to make a new account
please don’t use this as an opportunity to make new accounts.
or do, whatevs.
but ANSWER THE DAMN PROMPS OR I’LL DENY YOUR FUNNY COOL USERNAMES
edit: I’ll leave this up for the rest of the day to let everyone know its done. I’ll probably leave this unlocked so if anyone else wants to drop by and improve a translation or add a new one they can pop by and drop it in instead of making a whole new post or DMing me. not that’s gonna stop anyone from doing exactly that lmao either one’s fine.
old message
Hi folks, its me.
I’m stealing the top of the website for a few days because a thought occurred to me a while back that goes along the lines of “damn, we really haven’t updated the application for a hot minute haven’t we?” also “damn we’re getting quite a few international folks in but they might not know what the lingo and abbreviations in the application really mean”
which leads me to this post:
A general poll on what languages hexbear users know… (read: I’m too lazy to figure out how to do an actual poll thingy so I’ll just tally up everyones comments. Also don’t be a smartass and say “English lol”
)
And, arguably more exciting, a general request to our multilingual users to help translate the application into their language in order to help other possible new folks to know what we’re all about. (Also a general discussion on whether or not this is a good idea. I got a thumbs up from the others in the cabal of evil admins but I’m playing fast and loose with this because I had just drank a bunch of coffee when I wrote this up and I was vibrating like a hairless chihuahua walking through a park in fall.
)
To remind people what the application looks like, it’s the following three sentences.
How did you find out about Hexbear, and why do you want to join?
Why did you choose your username?
What are your views on Gender and Sexual Minorities [GSM] / LGBTQ rights, racial justice, animal liberation, and similar movements?
So to summarize, Im bored, im curious what languages everyone speaks, and I’m looking for volunteers to translate the application into their native tongue so future applicants can have an easier time understanding what the site’s about. The translated versions will be contained in spoilers so as to ensure the whole application page doesn’t look densely bloated like me after eating oatmeal

English lol
I’m throwing you in a gulag
I also speak English if you need an English speaker
This was lofted in the great
struggle sensation, but we should add “what are your thoughts on ‘Israel’?” To the formOther questions I have advocated for:
- What are your thoughts on AES?
- What are your thoughts on the US military?
It sounds ideal but we probably don’t want to make it too overwhelming for both applicants and reviewers.
Isntreal is a good binary red line, simple death to iSSreal or not.
Isntreal is a good binary red line, simple death to iSSreal or not.
Because death to amerikkka isn’t simple?
Fair enough on the AES question, I don’t know the volume of applicants, but a short answer of a sentence or two would probably do fine. I don’t think anyone is writing essays for their applications, pretty sure I answered all three current questions in a line or two.
I second this as well, any answer that still keeps israel in the picture is an easy reject.
was that the ss about including
?because iirc we had this pic of Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
instead(called :israel-cool: but can’t find it anymore), the struggle session must have happened when I wasn’t online for a couple of months, does anyone have a link to the thread about that? not looking to relitigate it lol just curious how it went down
Welcome back! This was the struggle session: https://hexbear.net/post/5887493
Thanks
Make it more closed-ended. Too much.
Who’s going to translate the application into Maoist Standard English?
admin abuseJust kidding this is a really cool thing to do
admin abuse
Hey, I speak Simplified English lol, Portuguese, a bit of Spanish and can somewhat read Latin (I know).
My unreviewed translation (feel free to, other Portuguese speakers) to the application form is the following:
"Como você ouviu falar de Hexbear, e por que você quer fazer parte da comunidade?
Por que você escolheu seu nome de usuário?
Qual é sua visão a respeito de minorias sexuais e de gênero / direitos LGBTQ, justiça racial, liberação de animais e movimentos similares?"
Some terms are somewhat hard to translate, so I’d thank suggestions and corrections.
Needs to be Mao Standard Portuguese
I have some very crappy irish, the application could be
Conas a fuair tú Hexbear, agus cén fáth ar maith leat dul isteach ar ann? (literal: how did you find hexbear and why would you like to enter it)
Cén fáth ar roghnaigh tú d’ainm úsáideora?
Cad a cheapann tú faoi cheartas ciníoch, cearta LADT, saoirse ainmhithe agus cúiseanna comhchosúla?
The last one could be wrong, as I am terrible at irish. (I blame
)I grew up speaking English and Norwegian, less specifically an Anglic and Scandinavian lect, or more specifically I grew up speaking strikingly idiosyncratic forms of GenAm and East Norwegian. I have tried to learn various other languages over the years and would say I’m at a decent level in Russian, Japanese, and Esperanto, and otherwise know tiny, fragmentary bits and pieces of a pretty wide range of different languages in all sorts of families from every corner of the globe, both spoken and signed.
I also have a few conlang projects I’m working on, and I’d say I could speak half-decently off the cuff in my most developed conlang, which has ~3K words at present. Not that that’s actually particularly useful for communicating with people, but it’s still kinda neat, right?
As for translating the application:
Norsk
Hvordan fant du ut om Hexbear? Hvorfor vil du skape en konto?
Hvordan valgte du brukernavnet ditt?
Hva er meningene dine om LHBT+ folk og deres rettigheter, om etnisk rettferdighet, om frigjøring av dyr, osv?
Glossed back into English
Hvordan fant du ut om Hexbear? Hvorfor vil du skape en konto?
Hvordan valgte du brukernavnet ditt?
Hva er meningene dine om LHBT+ folk og deres rettigheter, om etnisk rettferdighet, om frigjøring av dyr, osv?
You might wish to get another Norwegian speaker to verify that this translation looks good. I don’t really feel confident enough to translate the application into any other languages.
The Norwegian translation looks good

Is “etnisk retferdighet” a commonly used term in Norwegian?
I am still pondering how to translate “racial justice” into Danish and I can’t come up with something that sounds good.
I just used Tr-Ex and chose what seemed to be a common enough translation; I can’t say it’s a term I’ve ever heard in person.
I think it works in this context even though it’s not a commonly used term, but I suppose it could be replaced by simply using “rasisme”.
I translated it to spanish
, if any other nerds wants to change it a bit so its more neutral spanish feel freeComo encontraste Hexbear, y porque quieres unirte?
Explica su nombre de usuario?
¿Que Opinas de los siguentes temas: Derechos de la comunidad LGBTQ, Justicia Anti-Racial, Liberación Animal, y otros movimientos similares?
This is pretty good.
I think we can use “encontrar” instead of “descubrir” and drop the “sobre” for the first one: “¿Cómo encontraste Hexbear?”
I also think we can convert the second part into a command form: “Explica su nombre de usuario”
And the third one we can use the verb form of opinión and simplify some parts: "¿Qué opinas de los siguientes temas: los derechos de gente queer/trans, La justicia anti-racista, la liberación animal y otros movimientos políticos similares?
Also we should decide on el tuteo (formal speech vs informal) I’m leaning towards formal speech since it’s an application but if you know what’s the standard then go with what you know.
I find usted to be alienating, but I know many folks in latam find tuteo to be too personal.
That’s why as synthesis we should use “vos” and the colloquial “descubristes” to weed out any RAE-loving worms.
That would be cool too. Any anti RAE action is supported by me.
Formality is one of those untranslatable things. I think we can settle on usted just to be safe and formalities can be dropped after the user is accepted.
Sounds good to me
Polish and English.
Skąd wiesz o Hexbear, i dlaczego chesz dołączyć?
Jaki jest powód wybrania twojej nazwy użytkownika?
Jakie są twoje poglądy na temat Płci i Mniejszości Seksualnych [GSM] / praw LGBTQ, sprawiedliwości rasowej, wyzwolenia zwierząt i podobnych ruchów społecznych?
The only thing I can’t really get to sound right is “racial justice”, it sounds off. I don’t know how else to put it. I also made sure that the language is gender neutral, by directly addressing the reader. @PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml what do you think?
translates to Polish
The only thing I can’t really get to sound right is “racial justice”

sh-shut up. you, you goddamn anglo!!!

No idea, English language is such a minefield of old and new dogwhistles that i doubt i even could answer this question except the vague “I support our LGBT+ comrades in their struggle”.
Może “zadośćuczynienie” to lepsze tłumaczenie “justice” w tym kontekście, ale to be wciąż nie brzmiało dobrze, pewnie lepiej by było zupełnie pominąć to pytanie bo polska nie ma histori legalnej dyskryminacji na podstawie rasy

You could make a Cryptpad Form, disroot hosts a cryptpad instance you could use.
Like this: https://cryptpad.disroot.org/form/#/2/form/view/lVBgy1OcV-y51z6bDB0mx-IrOhDDs3lnHK5ImRICKtw/
Edit: There seems to be a problem with Lemmy where in links with
#before a+, it (+) is changed to%20(a space), which can break those linksOh that’s neat. I’m too much of a blockhead to automate the whole thing so I’ll choose to suffer doing it by hand like a peasant. Also I think doing this bone-headed style is a good motivator for community participation in the free marketplace of ideas

English, broken high-school Peggy Hill Spanish.
I’m stealing this comment to say me too.

Finnish, Swedish, English, some high school German.
Can definitely try to translate to Finnish when I have time.
Edit, translated them:

-
Miten kuulit Hexbear-sivustosta ja miksi haluat liittyä?
-
Millä perusteella/miksi valitsit käyttäjänimesi?
-
Mitkä ovat näkemyksesi sukupuoli- ja seksuaalivähemmistöjen oikeuksista, rodullistettujen oikeuksista, eläinten oikeuksista ja vastaavista liikkeistä?
Note: The meanings of the last question do not translate just as they are in the English version, because rights/justice and movement are used a bit differently and some of the terms don’t have good translations/get used like they are used in the question. The sentence I chose should however get the point across.

I only know English and a smattering of Japanese, sorry.
This but conversational on the latter
I know enough to know your name means water egg lol
That would be mizu tamago. It’s water bead (tama is a ball/ spherical object).
Edit: if I change accounts in the future water egg is going up there on the list though.
Oooooooooo I knew that

These are the meanings my pop-up dictionary browser extension lists for tama, which includes, funnily enough, “egg”.

And tama is the root of tamago, anyways. The go is a variant of ko as in kodomo, musuko, Youko etc.
(Note: MizuTama does not mean water egg, it in fact means drop of water)
Tamago is

tamago to the polls
Nuh uh it totally means water egg.
Didn’t you know about the fields of wild water eggs in Japan? Psssh, amateur.
Bingo
That one is rounder and flat, like a stamp or ink blot
That one refers to Min Chinese
