  • Think about your characters goals. What sort of environmental/political/social challenges will highlight what kind of person they are? What elements of a world can you use to justify a character arc? You can even get really wacky with this and come up with the justifications later when you’re researching how to write it down properly.

    For example, in AtLA, Aang’s first mentor was an obvious allusion to buddhist monks but he was a silly old guy who believed in living in the present moment. This had a huge impact on the entire story by influencing much of Aang’s personality.

    Or consider how the feelings of idealism Frodo has toward the Shire in LotR gives him the ability to resist temptation toward power. He’s happy with his home and fights through all three books to keep it the same as it was when he left.

    Not obsessing with worldbuilding is fine. It means what worldbuilding you do focus on has impact. Just think about “what do I want to convey?” and work outward from there.
