So is it legal to just kill people for anything now in Canada? Like, as long as you are polite about it?

They’ve been planning on expanding MAiD to the mentally ill and not just people with terminal conditions. This plan has been in the works before a federal disability benefit was tabled in the House (every province has their own benefits but they’re not enough to survive on, all are below minimum wage, legislated poverty). That disability benefit was only passed a few months ago and wont be in effect till late next year. They’re more willing to allow people to kill themselves rather than provide the aid that they so desperately need. The consensus I’ve seen amongst the disabled, especially those with mental illness, is that having their needs met (housing is the biggest one) would drastically improve their life and they wouldn’t consider MAiD, but because so many are struggling they feel like their only option now is to die. I remember hearing a story about a disabled man who was struggling to find accommodating housing so he talked to his doctor about MAiD, and the only reason why that man is still alive is because his doctor went out of their way to help them. It shouldn’t take one sympathetic person to get accommodations for an individual but hats how it is here in Canada. Thankfully that man is alive (as far as I know) but many will fall through the cracks (craters). Sorry for the info dump, I’m just very passionate about this subject…

It’s like a dream come true for every smuglord Redditor that uses the “u r mentally ill, kill urself” line of internet put-downs.

People in rural Canada have to travel several hours in some cases to receive methadone or Suboxone, but they’ll bring the suicide booth to your tent.

effect in 2016, will be expanded next March to give access to people whose sole medical condition is mental illness

And that includes being addicted to drugs. I’m no MD but I’m fairly certain depending on the drug that’s not solely a mental problem at some point or, if it is the type of drug where it is, why the fuck would you euthanize someone for being addicted to weed

but besides that, how could somebody with mental illness give informed consent about suicide?
