I am avoiding tiktok style videos like the plague but it’s hard to escape youtube shorts.
On the other thand yesterday I finished the new Down The Rabbit Hole - EVE: Online by Fredrik Knudsen - about 6hrs runtime
Edit: escaping shorts in the sense that some of them are actually well made, informative and/or funny
I think there is an extension to hide YouTube shorts, or you can probably use unlock origin too to create a filter for it
it’s hard to escape youtube shorts
I don’t get it

Here’s my uBlock origin custom rules for blocking youtube shorts:
! Block Youtube Shorts on front page youtube.com##ytd-rich-section-renderer > .ytd-rich-section-renderer > .ytd-rich-section-renderer[is-shorts=""] youtube.com##yt-formatted-string:has-text(/#shorts/):upward(ytd-rich-item-renderer.ytd-rich-grid-row) ! Block Youtube Shorts on the subscriptions page youtube.com##ytd-thumbnail-overlay-time-status-renderer[overlay-style=SHORTS]:upward(ytd-grid-video-renderer.ytd-grid-renderer) ! Remove Shorts on sidebar menu youtube.com##a.yt-simple-endpoint.ytd-guide-entry-renderer[title=Shorts]:upward(ytd-guide-entry-renderer.ytd-guide-section-renderer) ! Block Youtube Shorts on the search results page youtube.com##ytd-thumbnail-overlay-time-status-renderer[overlay-style=SHORTS]:upward(ytd-video-renderer.ytd-item-section-renderer) youtube.com##span.ytd-reel-shelf-renderer:has-text(/Shorts/):upward(ytd-reel-shelf-renderer.ytd-item-section-renderer)
I am much happier having this real estate back. Fuck yt shorts!
I have a redirector rule that redirects
youtube.com/shorts/whatever
withyoutube.com/watch?v=whatever
, so it uses the good player when I open a short.details here
Example URL: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/abcdefghijk
Include pattern: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/*
Redirect to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=$1
Pattern type: WildcardNow that is good to know

no those aren’t actual links
yup, i watch 20+ hour VODS of someone playing a game instead of just playing the game myself.
It’s quite similar to watching sports on TV instead of playing sports yourself. 3rd person enjoyment if you will
Although playing video games is still fun for me. Playing sports just reminds me of how old and decrepit my body has become over the years.
I do that cause I can’t play the game myself.
I buy a game then put the vods of other people playing on my other monitor
This is what I do as well. That’s when my middle-aged ass realized I’ve actually turned into my 9yo nephew lol
My 9yo cousins cant hack it. I let them play my pc and the second youtube went on the other screen they were hypnotised, completely stopped playing the game for 15 mins
i ain’t got time for that 10 hour bullshit… someone have a tl;dw summary of what’s in that paw patrol episode?
The police dog shoots a child on a routine traffic stop
Readers suggested additional context: Inside the stopped car there was a terrorist holding a child hostage and threatened to explode the car if demands weren’t met. Police dog took a shot and miserably failed, resulting in 30 casualties
There was no terrorist, police dog just wrote that in the official report to save their own ass. Don’t worry, after an internal investigation police dog has been transferred to a different department 30 miles away and insists a lesson was learned.
You forgot the part about the “terrorist” being the cop’s ex, and the baby being the out-of-wedlock love child of the ex and the cop’s former best friend. So the traffic stop’s justification in the first place was completely fucked.
I am also here for the Paw Patrol lore.
Nobody watches videos anymore. Back in the days, video recorders were invented so we don’t have to watch TV anymore, now there is a watch later list on YouTube.
do i spy a Dirk Gently reference? i say it’s a bit of a stretch, but that you should choose a video recorder for the metaphor… well, nothing is ever a coincidence.
You’re totally right, it was a reference to the electric monk. Well done!
Yeah, in the end it turns out the cops killed them and hid the bodies
Both videos are Copaganda served to you by the Global Centralized Police Department powered by Google, colloquially known as the GGCPD.
Jenny Nicholson has entered the chat…
The longform video format is highly underrated.
Some days I want to watch a 20 hour retrospective on Skyrim.
Other days I want to enjoy 20 hours of an AI voice recapping a Korean manhwa about the world’s most powerful necromancer from another world that’s like a video game…
YouTube shorts also have their place for micro hits of dopamine.
So long as it makes us happy, it can’t be that bad?

They probably meant 2023*
Holy shit Erik on Lemmy.
Fediverse, baby.
That is pretty much the state of it. Until some insane crazy person kills someone, and youtube considers a specific character to be a dog whistle showing support to the crazy person.
Yes this actually happened to Danny Phantom fans.
I imagine when Nickelodeon smash comes out, all of the videos showing off the Ember character are going to get flagged. I already had an Ember related video that got flagged for criminal Behavior and they turned down my appeal. Thankfully YouTube is not my job.
Maybe I’m a sucker for choosing to be a janitor instead of a YouTuber, but I at least have labor laws protecting my 13 an hour…
Better than “Fuck you because we’re Youtube” with a side of “We are falsley accussing you of being a groomer because you’re famous and we want attention”
I do watch some scientific/historical YouTube channels, but I try to keep them limited and vetted. I don’t mind (and actually enjoy) listing to someone passionately monologue regarding their hobby/favourite piece of media. That’s a low stakes topic where even if they’re giving me wrong info it’s not terribly harmful.
Not to say that ‘professional’(syndicated/broadcasted) documentaries are all truth, considering the History channel. I just like my background noise to not lead me down an awful rabbit hole.
Even National Geographic is going down the pseudoscience rabbit hole.
I try to Listen to True Crime stuff on youtube, but it’s really hard now that the name of basically every felony has to be censored out of the video to avoid demonetization
That’s because Fox now owns National Geographic.
Literally doing articles on “Magic is real, science says so! Here’s the evidence for voodoo!”
Not an exageration
