That and r/manga are really bad in that regard. I found an alright way to discover stuff to read is (aside from harassing friends/comrades for recommendations) to the MAL interest stacks page.
From time to time, someone with actual taste puts together a decent list, instead of just listing 20 horny romcoms.
yeah i mostly harass friends and sometimes check out things people recommend here
and also recommend things a lot and sometimes people go “oh, i liked that! it reminded me of x, you should check it out!”
