I wasn’t aware that only a bot is allowed to create episode discussion posts. It’s not in the rules. Is there a reason for this? I don’t really see why it has to go through a bot when it wasn’t created automatically
I can update the sidebar this evening once I am no longer on mobile to clarify the current state of affairs. Thanks for pointing out that I can make this clearer. If you are curious as to why things are set up this way, I wrote about it during last season after asking the community for feedback.
The short version is that most people liked having the threads in this community rather than separated out like it was last year. At the same time, there was a sizeable minority that did not want to see them. So, by consolidating all the discussion threads to a single bot, it lets those users block the bot and only see the user created content they are interested in.
I see, that’s fair enough. Thanks for explaining

Currently airing show discussion threads are created by our resident bot, rikka@ani.social. If it doesn’t make a thread for an episode that you want to discuss, see the user guide on the wiki for instructions on how to request that rikka make a thread for you to use.
Fair, but that’s not a rule though.
I just noticed that rikka updates each episode thread with a link all other episode’s threads for that season.
That is incredibly useful for someone like me who is catching up on old episodes!
And then that makes this pinned thread even more useful because any episode in the season is 2 clicks away.
any episode in the season is 2 clicks away
That’s the idea! Also, three clicks away if you count clicking the wiki page, choosing the season, and then the episode you want.
One thing I really wish was possible was linking a post in such a way that it is instance agnostic. So, a user on a different instance can just click the link in the table and be taken to the correct thread on their home instance. I remember seeing that this is already being discussed on the lemmy github, but not here yet. Alas…
I noticed that dropped shows get removed from the index. That’s not good for someone who falls behind and wants to catch up.
I have this on my list of improvements to make, I just haven’t had much time to work on it for the past month or so. I have an idea of how to do this, but it will be a pretty long list. So, I am not sure the best way to organize it without completely swamping the rest of the post.
I didn’t realise there were links in here. I only saw the names and figured the hyperlinks were broken for me. I didn’t realise I had to scroll horizontally. It seems like tables are a bit broken on my lemmy client, because it’s not clear at all haha. This is what it looks like for me:
Voyager, Thunder, and Jerboa are the only Android apps that I know of that handle tables correctly.
Here’s a screenshot of the top of this post in Vger
Maybe I’ll check them out again. I’ve tried them before, but wasn’t a big fan of the UI.
I hear ya. I love Connect, but it hasn’t been updated in months and there are soooo many bugs…
Boost for Lemmy does a good job with tables as well. Though, it fails in some other ways, like it doesn’t render spoiler tags correctly, so all the stuff behind a spoiler tag is visible (kind of defeating the purpose).
What client is that? Having an open api that enables tons of third party clients can be a double-edged sword. I will update the text a bit to make it clearer there are links in the table this evening.
Development seems a bit dead unfortunately, so there are some bugs that haven’t been ironed out yet from when it was forked over from Infinity for Reddit, but I can’t get used to other clients… I’m not developer either so can’t really help
There’s weirdness with Seiyuu Radio no Uraomote: The discussion thread was dropped for today’s episode 3 because ep2 last week didn’t get any comments, both episode threads for episode 1 and 2 were modified today, so both episode threads say “16 hours ago” but they were actually created 7 and 14 days ago.
Alright, I think I have ID’d the issue. Basically, when a new episode thread gets made, all the past threads also get updated to reflect the new episode listed in the table of links. What is happening is that when rikka drops a series it will still go back and update all the old threads even though the content is all the same. It’s not hurting anything from a functionality perspective I don’t think, but it is a bunch of lemmy actions that aren’t needed (especially as the lemmy ecosystem is struggling with load already). I will make sure this is on my list of improvements for the near future.
This post has been surprisingly useful, given how fast the discussion threads are scrolling off the first page, thanks to automation…
I do wish that the list of shows was sorted in some order so they’d be easier to search…
Right now it is reverse chronological based on the time that the thread was created and limited to the most recent thread for any show within the past eight days. Open to suggestions if something else makes more sense.
I have been surprised at how many shows have stuck around with 1-2 comments and hadn’t expected this list to be so long. This might be something I adjust through changing the comment threshold for rikka.
I’d expect that many shows to survive at the start of the season when everyone is curious as to what the new shows are about.
Heck, I’ll still be catching up on new shows that I haven’t tried this week.
I would expect the worst or least interesting to drop this week, with some mediocre and less interesting shows dropping before and around episode 6.
Having a large number of show threads sticking around isn’t a bad thing. That means !anime@ani.social is growing and has a diverse userbase.
Giving this some more thought, perhaps if I broke the giant table up by day? Each day could be a heading with a table under it with the episodes posted that day. I will play around with it when I get a chance.
I don’t know about others, but an alphabetic title sort would help me most.
I use this list when something’s scrolled off the front page, so by date wouldn’t help me much.
Also, some thought is going to be needed about what happens when rikka drops a show.
I have done some fiddling and figured out how to do an alphabetical sort. I have it A->Z based on the English name and then A->Z based on the romaji for shows that don’t have a separately listed English name (usually because the JP name is already in English).
As for shows that rikka isn’t posting anymore, they should automatically get dropped from the table after the linked post is >8 days old. This post originally had the final episodes of each of the winter shows listed, but those have since been pruned away because they were more than 8 days old.
I have been updating the wiki pages with all the created discussion threads (even the dropped shows) if people want to reference them for any reason. As of right now, these wiki updates are manually done by me, so there is some lag between a thread being created and the wiki being updated.
After giving it some thought, what I’d suggest is that dropped 0 comment shows get dropped to the bottom of the list, and have an italicized “dropped due to lack of comments” or some such verbiage.
Or maybe under a subheading of “Weekly episode threads dropped due to low interest - Request a discussion thread if desired” or something of that nature, with a link to the appropriate wiki section for rikka requests.
Keeping even a deprecated row for each show, to acknowledge that rikka “knows” about the show, but articulate why she isn’t posting episode discussion threads.
Hmm, I will look at this. It will probably mean changing some database management under the hood. Also, the list of media items that rikka keeps track of is pretty long since it also includes long-running but non-seasonal shows (One Piece, Pokemon, Crayon Shin-chan, etc.). It’s long enough that this might work better as a wiki page rather than a list in the lemmy post…or maybe a top level comment? I will think about it.
Building on this, dropped shows could alternatively be put in their own table hidden in a spoiler tag, so that they’d be there for those looking for them, but the post stays looking a bit more tidy.
See above, but the list of items is probably too long to include in the main post body. I am going to have to do some thinking about how best to capture this since it has been asked for now. Perhaps as a dedicated wiki page or a top level comment.
Also, where the Japanese name is also the English name, such as “Astro Note”, or “The Fable”, or “Highspeed Etoile” I think you can just copy over the Japanese name to the English column.
If you have time to work on it, an exception for English sorting, sorting titles like “The Fable” under “F”, e.g. like “Fable, The”, instead of under “T”, or “A Certain Scientific Railgun” under “C” instead of “A”, or “An I couldn’t come up with a real title” under “I” instead of “A”
just copy over the Japanese name to the English column
This is something I should be able to figure out easy enough and had thought the same. Look for this update in the next couple days.
Ignore articles in the beginning of a title
I was absolutely positive that there was going to be a python library that had this implemented already that I could just plug in and make use of. However, after some searching, I came up empty. I have an idea of how to do this myself, but the implementation is going to be nontrivial, so it will take a bit more time.
There aren’t any perfect choices are there?
It looks a little easier to search as long as I can keep the sort rules in mind.
Thanks!
