The last “Star Trek” feature film released in theaters was “Star Trek Beyond” back in 2016. The movie was directed by Justin Lin, the filmmaker behind “Better Luck Tomorrow” and several of the “Fast and Furious” movies, and it was co-written by Simon Pegg, who also played Scotty in the film. “Beyond,” the third film in the Kelvin timeline, was … pretty good. The action was clear and the character work was solid — the entire cast brought their A-games — but the film overall was generic action nonsense; it was the fourth “Star Trek” film in a row about a twisted villain on a mission of revenge. Sadly, “Beyond” wasn’t as big a hit as Paramount wanted, and it seemed to be the end of the road for “Star Trek” in theaters.
Ever since, though, Paramount has been persistently struggling to make a fourth “Star Trek” movie set in the Kelvin timeline. As of this writing, some new plans are afoot to finally make said film along with a prequel movie set at an earlier point in the “Star Trek” timeline. Given how many false starts there have been on “Star Trek 4,” however, one will simply have to bide their time to see if anything comes to fruition
…
In an interview with Katee Sackhoff on “The Sackhoff Show,” Pegg talked a little bit about his “Star Trek” experiences. In doing so, he admitted he has a hard time imagining “Star Trek 4” ever getting made, seeing as it would be “tainted” by Yelchin’s absence.
…
“I’d love to do more. Obviously, it’s been forever tainted because we lost Anton, and that was a really hard thing for everyone involved, and for the real world, let alone anything else. If we do come back, if there is another opportunity to come back, I’d love to. Because as we were saying earlier on, it’s a group of guys that I dearly, dearly love and don’t get to see very often […] It would be good to get back together with them.”
It’s time to move on from TNG and TOS. We need a new crew on a new Enterprise beginning their voyage 50-100 years after the Dominion War. We need something fresh and most importantly we need hope to return to Star Trek. The vision of a better future is essential to good Trek and it’s mostly been abandoned. Enough with the gritty high drama high action stuff. Trek thrives in philosophical sci-fi and in presenting us with a better version of humanity.
God am I freaking tired of doomsday plots and imposters in charge of the federation and all of that. I watch Trek because I don’t want to see real life there.
Picard season 2 spoilers
I legit cannot watch Picard season 2 anymore because of the fires and all of the horrors they saw. (Ignoring plot reasons) because it was just unbearable. Hey watch this show! You can see how fucked the planet is, and by the way you have zero power to change any of it, but let’s keep beating you with how bad your world is!
Ffs, bring back the best of the Federation. The ones who don’t hate each other, who protect the innocent, who fight for what’s right, and it’s been institutionalized and at a societal level. I want to see some goddamn utopia shows, I want to believe we can turn this sinking ship around, not be constantly reminded how fucked everything is.
I am still angry af at how picard mangled the dominion war and fucking sanctioned section 31. Stay the fuck away from ds9, kurtzmann. You don’t fingerpaint on the work of masters
I have completely memory-holed Picard.
I’m not a trekkie, I just watched everything trek there is, I’m not the kind of guy who’s going to get a reference to decades-old material for the simple reason that I don’t re-watch everything once a year, I’m not steeped in canon. Yet that whole series completely fails to even register as trek in my memory. I guess there was a defunct Borg cube involved? Must’ve been trek but it doesn’t mesh with anything.
Curious though, what would that be like?
You’d have: • A much friendlier Klingon Empire • The Romulans might be nicer or might not(depending on if they eventually out the whole plot that dragged them into the war) • The Borg would be Pissed over the transwarp hub loss, and might be worried about a joint Dominion/Federation teamup. • The Ferengi are adapting to be nicer and likely more federation friendly within DS9 • The Cardassians would be rebuilding still, but wouldn’t be a match for a militarized Voyager+DS9 Starfleet.
Problems start with the two best plot villains being either the Borg or the Romulans and both have been done to Death in movies.
Then that they “modernized” the ship interiors for both SNW and Picard, which would have been a great thing to do with a 100 year jump past TNG/DS9/Voyager.
Discovery had a neat hook once they jumped into the future and it dealt with a Federation that lost warp, but frankly Battletech, Wh40k and Traveller all called and they want their main space travel hook back.
Maybe in the wake of their surrender and Odo rejoining them the Founders step back or even go into isolation entirely. The Dominion collapses and there is widespread fighting in the gamma quadrant as different factions seek to take the Founders place. The new series could primarily be set in that quadrant. Maybe the Federation established a foothold in the gamma quadrant so that they controlled both sides of the wormhole and the Enterprise is there to expand the Federation’s influence. That would give the writers freedom to introduce new antagonists because DS9 did very little actual exploration of the gamma quadrant.
Edit: gamma not delta
The Ferengi are adapting to be nicer and likely more federation friendly within DS9
Ferenginar joins the Federation in Lower Decks
The clips I’ve seen of that show look interesting, if a bit more action oriented than I would have expected from the premise, but it looks good.
Not enough to justify getting another streaming service though.
🏴☠️
Ironic, given that Lower Decks has become the primary source for pretty much anything Orion by now.
Not all Orions are pirates. It’s actually really insensitive to talk that way. /lh
Do the same thing Tng did; make old enemies allies and invent new antagonist.
I think it’s just time to hang up the hat. There’s obviously nobody left in Hollywood who understands what Star Trek actually is, so they should just stop making them.
No we don’t need to move on from TNG and TOS we need more of it, and Strange New Worlds proved it. Also that kind of stuff is exactly what you demand when you’re talking about philosophy and better version of humanity.
Too much gritty drama, not enough humour, not enough not taking yourself too damn seriously all the fucking time so when you have some grit to tell it actually hits. Too much fucking nauseating camera movement. Stop copying your pacing from soap operas. Going full Orville would be too much (though the later seasons toned it down) for the main live-action series, but did you know Lower Decks is 100% canon?
As to movies in particular: Make them extensions of the series, again, long (semi-)off-season-arc episode with big budget. There’s never been a movie Garak, and that’s a problem. Pick up good non-Trek scripts and adapt them to the setting, say, what would Arrival look like if it was Trek?
I’m 2 episodes into strange new worlds, does it get better? I mean I’m still in the setup stages, right?
The beginning is kinda weird because Pike’s backstory has been told in Discovery. Best part of that series, btw. SNW thus kinda half-tells it, making it more mysterious than it is if you haven’t watched Discovery.
The series is mostly episodal, it does have a splattering of story threads that go all season, character development arcs etc. but the focus is always on the planet of the day.
I can understand if people are saying that they’ve leaned a bit too much into older TV tropes (heck there’s a musical episode!) but overall it’s really good. Certainly hits the ground running much better than TNG which is a whole first season of cringe before it finds its pace.
No we don’t need to move on from TNG and TOS we need more of it, and Strange New Worlds proved it
Picard proved the opposite.
Picard was more Picard but definitely not more TNG/TOS. I’m talking about structure, about storytelling, not cast.
But then Lower Decks proved it again
Maybe evil enterprise in mirror darkly universe going around doing cool Byzantine stuff
TLDR Because Anton died.
Yeah, it isn’t tainted because of that, I can tell you.
Yeah, the headline horribly twists his words. I think he’s saying that the experience filming another Star Trek movie in that universe will be forever tainted for the cast.
They really did completely fuck with what he said to make it as clickbaity as possible. Fucking scumbags, taking someone talking about fond memories and emotional pain and then mutating it into something hideous for profit.
First Contact was the last good Star Trek movie. I hope someday it’s dethroned, but I’m not holding my breath.
Dethroned? You rate First Contact above TOS films?
I do, yes. Would you like to settle this in a holodeck??
OH WAIT TOS DIDN’T HAVE THOSE
Only if we’re Mark Twain.
Generations is the best Star Trek movie ever because it’s the first one I saw in theaters. I don’t even remember what it’s about
A TL;DR could be “time traveling ribbons”
Now I remember it even less!

Why is their instinct always to go further back in time, do more prequels? Sure, The Journey Home and First Contact did well, but they were also an established crew in a fish-out-of-water situation. A next generation feels long overdue at this point, but I absolutely don’t trust the current creative leadership to do it right.
If they had just set SNW on a new ship post-DS9 I would be happy.
Keep the cast, change the character names, put it on a new ship. Enough with the nostalgia-milking already!
Because Star Trek was originally about using sci-fi as a way to discuss social issues and all the new movies were nothing but sci-fi fluff?
Viewers would rather watch things explode than be forced to think about anything.

You know… Every time I hear that Chekov’s absence needs to be explained, I sigh. Chekov was on the Reliant in Wrath of Khan. There’s zero reason they can’t just say that. The Khan arc won’t matter, Genesis may still get made and they may need to find a test planet. It’s not that difficult.
What I really still want is to see the probe from Voyage Home to come looking for the whales. Let’s see if Action
JacksonKirk can figure it out without a Bird of Prey or blowing up the 1701-A.More to the point, it’s an ensemble show about a pseudo-military ship’s crew. Since when has it ever been necessary to explain crew changes beyond “personnel got reassigned?”
The Wrath Of Khan was, is, and forever will be the best Trek movie of all time. TOS cast, 3D space fighting, ear worms, you will forever be my friend, what are you freakin kidding me, you can’t beat that, you just can’t. I’d like to see some good Trek movies made with a different cast than the Pine one, that’s over, run it’s course, etc, but you’re never gonna beat Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!
Which is why they remade it twice, and fucked it up both times.
Something bubbles up from a few decades back:
“I mean, it’s a fact, sure as day follows night, sure as eggs is eggs, sure as every odd-numbered Star Trek movie is shit.”
Beyond was… Not good. I liked the others though.
Oh, are we just pretending Into Darkness doesn’t exist?
Probably for the best. Derivative nonsense.
I liked it more than beyond.
As a casual star trek fan, beyond was my favorite of the three. The first one was enjoyable and I didn’t really like the second one. But I thought the third one was a lot of fun and had more memorable moments than the rest
As a hardcore trek fan: fucken loved it. Not everything has to be fine art, the universally best loved film is batshit insane with whales ffs
I don’t think I’ll ever understand this current obsession with the death of an actor meaning the death of a character. It’s acting. The whole point is that multiple people can play the role over the years. The only thousands of people have played Romeo? Just get another actor. Tons of rolls have been recast. It’s fine. I’m sure that actor did a fine job in the role but it’s not like he was the only the first one to play the role, someone else can take over. We’ve seen other people that were all before and it’s fine.
