I remember being told growing up that you should never flash your brights at an oncoming car (even if their brights are on) because they might be gang members or hopeful gang members and they’ll turn around and kill you for street cred or maybe as the price of entry into the gang.
My mom wouldn’t let me get a cell phone case with a dragon on it because the Yakuza use it as a mascot and she thought if I pulled it out at the mall (in Oklahoma, you know, a Yakuza hotspot if I’ve ever seen one /s) that I’d be shot on site.
Then there was fears that gang members were eating pets in Ohio.
What I mean to say is that gangs are easy targets for lies, racism, and more lies. After calling Wolf on the Venezuelan gang in Aurora, CO, I can’t really trust the news to report properly on the subject.
That doesn’t mean I think gangs don’t exist or that they’re harmless. We’re just not getting a good look at the groups because of how quickly we “other” them.
